The sergeant, who has not been named by police, was in Ladysmith Road, Lipson at around 4.30pm yesterday when he saw the two men carrying bags from a property into a van. It is understood he could smell cannabis and so contacted response officers.
As they arrived three men left in the van, which was stopped by police, and two men left via the rear of the property. They too were stopped and arrested by police.
Entering the property police said they discovered a large cannabis cultivation set up. However it had effectively been cleared of cannabis plants.
The five men - aged 26, 31, 33, 38 and 60 - were taken to Charles Cross police station where they were questioned. All five remain in custody at this time.
