Firefighters discovered a cannabis farm when they were called to a blazing building in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter.

Members of the public raised the alarm when they saw a derelict office block in Pitsford Street go up in flames at 6.30pm on Saturday.

When crews went inside they found cannabis plants, as well as equipment associated with production of the drug.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said it was a very severe fire which caused enormous damage.

"It destroyed 30 to 40 per cent of the first floor and around half of the roof space," he said.

"There was also a partial collapse of the ceiling due to the structural timbers burning away."

He said the end of terrace building was once used as offices but was now empty and derelict. "Because we suspect it was being used as a cannabis farm, we handed it over to the police."

He said they also had to call in council structural engineers because the building remained unsafe.
