THE police and fire service have issued a warning about the dangers of cannabis cultivation.

THE police and fire service have issued a warning about the dangers of cannabis cultivation.

The message comes after several incidents of fire hazards being caused by cultivation in recent months.

Detective Inspector Jon Cross said: "Those who choose to grow cannabis at home must consider the impact and potential risks involved - not only to themselves and their own property, but also the wider neighbouring community."

A spokesman from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said it can put the neighbouring properties in danger.

"Growing cannabis is very dangerous, as are the associated fire risks with poorly maintained and misused equipment," he said.

"Using high energy heat lamps in these conditions is very hazardous and the overloading of electrical sockets poses a serious fire risk.

"The other concern with incidents of this nature is they are often in a residential area, which puts neighbouring residents and properties at risk.

"It is unlikely those who grow cannabis consider the safety of their neighbours so it is important all residents fit their homes with smoke alarms as this will give an early warning and vital time to escape should a fire occur."
