Fifth Edition of Medical Cannabis Bike Tour Rides Through Southern Europe
At this time, cyclists from around the world are in training and bikes are being tweaked in preparation for a special date in the cannabis sporting diary... The Medical Cannabis Bike Tour rides again this year!
MCBT16 is heading for the mountains of Slovenia and the hills and plains of northern Italy. It is the 5th instalment of an incredible adventure that started with only two riders in 2012 and this year is hoping to have 100 cyclists participating.
Riding 420km in 3 days, the event takes place from May 17 – 19th, with an official arrival at the Indica Sativa trade show in Bologna on May 20th. Riders and sponsors from across Europe, North and South America, are participating in what has been called ‘the world’s biggest cannabis sporting event’.
Once again, sponsors have lined up to put their name on the MCBT shirt and be involved with a truly inspirational cause. This year, the bike tour will reach its target of 350,000 Euro to fund independent clinical trials into the effects of cannabinoids (THC and CBD) as a first line cancer treatment.
The trials will test the research of scientists from Madrid’s Complutense University and have the backing of GEINO (the Spanish group of neurooncological investigation). With the support of Spanish health authorities, the trials will use cannabinoids in conjunction with existing anti-cancer treatments. Independently funded, the research will be open source – for science, not profit.
“This is an exciting year for us,” says Bike Tour organizer, Luc Krol. “With the sponsorship from this year’s bike tour, we are finally going to have enough money to begin clinical trials later in the year, treating cancer patients with cannabinoids.”
The bike tour gets bigger every year and with more recognition around the world, with invitations to ride in Australia and the USA. We continue to challenge stereotypes. Each year the MCBT continues to spread the word. It’s all about getting on the bike and pedalling for positive change!
For this edition of the tour we are focused on bringing the MCBT message to southern Europe. Italy is undergoing significant changes and medical cannabis is gaining more widespread acceptance which is very encouraging. Italy and Slovenia have a fantastic cycling culture, so we are looking forward to bringing the MCBT there.”
