A cannabis cultivation factory was found in rural Ballyward near Castlewellan as part of several police searches

Eight people have been arrested following the discovery of a cannabis factory in Co Down.

The arrests were made after police searched 11 locations across Northern Ireland over a suspected organised crime gang.

Drugs and cars were seized during the searches on Tuesday.

A cannabis cultivation factory was found in rural Ballyward near Castlewellan while seven vehicles valued at upwards of £100,000 were also taken.

Among the cars seized were two BMWs and a Mercedes.

Seven men and one woman were arrested in during the raids.

Five men remain in custody while the other three suspects have been released on police bail.

Police estimated the street value of the drugs at £350,000.
