A MAN found with more than £1,700 worth of herbal cannabis told a court that unemployment and depression led him to increase his consumption of the drug and buy in bulk to save money
Barry John Lloyd, 21, of Rhoslan, Guilsfield, pleaded guilty to possession of 177 grammes of cannabis on March 13, when he appeared at Welshpool Magistrates Court.
He was fined £150 and ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and a victim surcharge of £20.
Justin Espie, prosecuting, said police officers attending Lloyd's address could smell cannabis and as a consequence a search was made when a large amount of herbal cannabis was found with a value of around £1,770.
Despite the quantity it was accepted that it was for his own use and Ceri Edwards, for Lloyd, said he had taken to smoking cannabis on a more regular basis to help him calm himself, sleep and cope with the depression of unemployment.
But, she said, since the arrest he had stopped using cannabis and has been trying to get his life back on track including getting a placement with a recruitment agency, attending a gym and playing football with a local team.
He had also signed up for charity fundraisers including the Lake Vyrnwy bike ride and a triathlon.
