CBD skincare is alleged to help everything from acne to wrinkles and signs of ageing. But are these benefits real?

What is CBD?

CBD comes from marijuana and hemp plants. CBD is extracted and typically mixed with oils like hemp, olive or coconut to enhance its application and effectiveness.

CBD oil in skincare won't get you high because it doesn't have the same properties as THC. It's extracted from the stalks and stems of the hemp plant, where the THC content is exceptionally low.

Hemp seed oil is an omega-rich oil sourced from the hemp plant's seeds (also known as the cannabis sativa plant). Unfortunately, these seeds don't contain calming cannabinoids and generally only trace amounts of CBD. CBD is sourced from hemp stems and stalks and helps restore balance in the body alongside other benefits.

Why is CBD good for the skin?

CBD diffuses reactivity in the skin like redness, rough texture & dullness – by telling skin cells to behave more calmly.

CBD for acne-prone skin?

Acne-prone skin can feel uncomfortable; CBD can soothe and calm the skinned is likely to reduce breakouts and redness visibly.

Studies have shown CBD oil can soothe skin, making it suitable for acne-prone skin. Its calming propertied shlep skin is prone to breakouts, look and feel better.

Research shows CBD can also decrease excess oil production due to its balancing effect on skin oil flow. Despite this promising research, more conclusive studies are needed to confirm the benefits of using CBD for acne-prone skin.

CBD for skin ageing

Antioxidants in CBD may help to reduce any visible signs of ageing. It does this by fighting free-radical damage and reducing inflammation. In addition, CBD skin care can help reduce issues like wrinkles, dullness, and redness.

Many other antioxidants are effective for skin care, but CBD isn't the only or "best" antioxidant by any stretch. The more of these ingredients you give to the skin, the better.

CBD for sensitive skin

CBD has also been found to have significant soothing properties. Its calming effects can minimise skin sensitivity issues, including redness and reactivity. All skin types can be affected by environmental stress, so CBD's soothing properties are helpful to everyone.

CBD skincare in pregnancy?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding it is best to consult your doctor or midwife to discuss the use of CBD before, during and after pregnancy.
