A man fined for having cannabis claimed he didn’t know smoking the drug at home was a crime.
Kelvin Dixon, 28, appeared at Carlisle Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of the class B drug.
On August 14 two men police suspected of being involved in a burglary were seen knocking on the door of his home on Blackwell Road, Currock, Carlisle.
Police later asked Dixon if he knew the two individuals.
He was then asked to step outside his property, where he was searched, and police found a joint in one of his pockets.
In court Dixon said: “I thought it wasn’t illegal to smoke cannabis in your house.”
District Judge Gerald Chalk told Dixon that possession of the drug is a crime.
He fined Dixon £90 and also ordered him to pay costs of £85 and a £20 victim surcharge.
