A motorist caught transporting cannabis worth more than £300,000 along the M6 near Carlisle has been told he faces an inevitable jail sentence.
In the boot of his Nissan car they discovered three cardboard boxes crammed with 220 cannabis resin blocks. Weighing 110 kilos, they had a street value of £315,000.
At the city's Crown Court, Howard, of Parkside Road, Birkenhead, admitted possessing the class B drug with intent to supply.
Prosecutor Gerard Rogerson told the court that police intercepted the defendant as he drove northwards along the M6 near junction 43, near the city's Rosehill industrial estate. He was in the process of transporting the drugs to a contact in Glasgow.
Judge Paul Batty QC told Howard, a man of previous good character, that he accepted that he had been a courier, but he told him: "This is desperately serious stuff.
"To be involved as a courier of this amount of cannabis from Liverpool to Glasgow is, I am afraid, of such magnitude that custody is quite inevitable. The only question is the length of the sentence."
Given the seriousness of the offence, and that the defendant was a man in his middle years who had not been in trouble before in his adult life, Judge Batty said he wanted to see a background report before passing sentence.
Michael Jones, for Howard, said his client, a married man, was unemployed at the time he was caught on May 13 and it was his financial difficulties which had been a key factor in attracting him to the venture.
Judge Batty will sentence Howard on August 21 after the background report has been prepared. In the meantime, he will remain remanded in custody.
