CANNABIS user Liam Webb assaulted his mum after acting 'bizarrely' outside her home.
North Staffordshire magistrates yesterday heard Webb, aged 20, put his arms across his mum's throat and pushed her back.
He then kicked her front door damaging the letter box.
Now Webb has been sentenced to a 12 month community order with supervision and told to complete six sessions of an alcohol workbook.
Prosecutor Natalie Merchant said the defendant went to his mum's home in Salkeld Place, Chell Heath, at 12.30am on July 26.
Miss Merchant said: "There was concern that he had taken something. He stayed outside and was acting bizarrely.
"At about 2.30am he came back in the house demanding to know why the police had been called. He demanded keys.
"He used his arms across his mum's throat to push her back."
In a statement Mrs Webb said it was an isolated incident as the defendant has not acted in this way before. She added she does not think he deliberately intended to assault her.
Webb, of Summerhill Drive, Newcastle, pleaded guilty to assault and criminal damage.
Representing himself, he told magistrates he was very sorry and was disappointed in himself. He added he still uses cannabis occasionally but was '100 per cent committed' to complying with any community order.
Webb was fined £50 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 surcharge.
