Cannabis grower ends up in jail after flouting law
A MAN found growing cannabis has been jailed because he was already subject to a suspended sentence when he was caught.
A MAN found growing cannabis has been jailed because he was already subject to a suspended sentence when he was caught.
Simon Evans, aged 34, of Pembrey Road in Llanelli, admitted producing cannabis after police discovered drugs and a hydroponics set-up in his home.
He has previous drugs convictions from 2009 and 2012 and another recorded just four months before this conviction.
In February this year Evans also received a nine month term, suspended for two years for offences of fraud.
It was accepted by the prosecution at Swansea Crown Court that he was producing the drugs for his own use.
Cadi Dewi, for Evans, said her client had been suffering from depression for the last year and said he had told her he was in a "bad place" at the time.
Recorder David Miller said growing drugs was not a one-off offence but was a "deliberate flouting" of drugs law.
"It's not a one-off, it's not just in a moment of madness of going and buynig it, it's setting something up with a view to cultivating drugs," he said.
He said he would activate six months of the suspended sentence because Evans was fully aware he was subject to the order.
"It doesn't take a genius to work out if you set up hydroponics and grow 12 plants, you're breaking the law," said the judge before also imposing a two month term for the production offence.
