POLICE seized cannabis plants from a house after a fire at the property.

Officers were called to a house in Lemon Street, South Shields, on Saturday, March 8, at 5.43pm after the cannabis farm was discovered by firefighters.

Officers found 200 cannabis plants were being cultivated in the loft. The plants have been seized and further enquiries will be made by officers.

Acting Inspector Nick Gjorven, of the West Shields and Riverside Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "I would ask anyone who suspects there is drug-related activity in their area to contact police.

"Officers are keen to speak to anyone who might have seen people coming and going from the address in recent weeks and who might have information that could help with our enquiries."
