A fire in a rented property in The Butts, Frome, has uncovered a cannabis factory.

The find was discovered after reports of a fire at the house on the morning of Saturday, April 19 when fire crews were called to the property.

Three fire crews rushed to the scene and discovered the first floor bedroom well alight which has spread into the another room.

The fire fighters used specialist breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze and it took some time to extinguish it.

The road was closed while the fire was dealt with and police were alerted to the scene on the discovery of the cannabis plants and equipment.

About 30 plants were uncovered and fire crews preserved the scene for officers to investigate.

The fire was believed to have been started by an electrical fault and the fire caused severe damage to the bedroom floor and ceiling.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to a property in The Butts, Frome at about 10.37am.

"Three fire engines went to the incident, one Frome engine and two Wiltshire crews.

"On arrival an intense fire was discovered in the back bedroom of the property, which had spread into another room.

"The room was severely damaged by the fire, which we believe was started by an electrical fault.

"Once the fire was dealt with we informed police of the plants and equipment that had been discovered."

Frome police have said the tenant has been identified as a man in his 20s, who was arrested in connection with the find and bailed pending further enquiries.
