Coventry Blaze's new signing Jereme Tendler was banned for using a recreational drugs in 2012 after an 'inadvertent consumption' of cannabis.

The Canadian forward served a six-week ban after traces of the drug were discovered during a routine urine test after a Hull Stingrays match in January 2012.

He told the UK Anti-Doping in Sport (UKAD) board that he unwittingly ate a cake containing the class B drug during a trip to Amsterdam

The 30-year-old explained he had returned from a night out and found cakes his girlfriend and his teammate's girlfriend had bought together.

The two women had returned to the hostel earlier, while Tendler and three of his teammates went to a club.

The findings from the board's report accepted his reasoning: "The (women) purchased some snacks. They were described as 'special cakes' and the females understood this to mean they contained cannabis.

"They bought about four or five cakes, in the form of brownies and cupcakes. They shared one brownie between them and went to sleep.

"Tendler and his friends returned to the hostel at about 3am. The athlete was hungry so ate some snacks from the table in the room, including the cakes that had been left there by his girlfriend and her friend.

"He was not aware the cakes contained cannabis. Independent expert opinion has confirmed the explanation is consistent with the level of cannabis found in the athlete's sample on the day of the sample collection."

Tendler, who logged 172 goals and 120 assists in 228 games during his four-year stint with the Stingrays, was suspended from February 3 and served 23 days of the sanction which saw him missing eight matches for his former side.

Stingrays club director Mike Cowley said: "It was an inadvertent consumption, which the UK Anti-Doping recognised and took into consideration."
