A MAN who used cannabis as pain relief was caught with 35kg of the drug and £70,000 in cash,
Ashley May said he was asked to look after the drug, and used illegal substances for pain relief
The 36-year-old, of Great Wood Close, Hartcliffe, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis with intent to supply, as well as possessing the tranquilliser diazepam.
Jailing him for 45 months, recorder Mr Henry Martineau told him: "Either you were dealing on a large scale or you had enough money to pay off your drug debt.
"I am told you have put these matters behind you. I hope that is true."
Imogen McCabe, prosecuting, said police visited May's home and he was arrested after his fingerprints were found on packaging in Easton.
A search of his home revealed bags of vegetable matter in a shed as well as more of the same in the kitchen and bedroom.
There was also a shoe box containing £20,000, scales, mobile phones and 92 tablets found to contain diazepam.
Ms McCabe said a search of May's mother's home in Hartciffe revealed more cannabis resin and £50,000.
May told police he was the only one who knew anything about it.
He said he had been offered £500 to hold drugs for "a couple of weeks" but believed the person he was looking after it for was jailed. He said he had paid £45 for the yellow tablets, which he thought were Valium.
Sam Jones, defending, said: "It was a very foolish decision to take possession of a significant quantity of drugs and engage in taking illegal substances."
Mr Jones said his client had been unwell but the cancer was in remission. Mr Jones said May had taken diazepam as a painkiller.
