A FORMER heavy drug user who decided to grow cannabis plants on his windowsill has been fined.
It is not clear why Mark Horden decided to display the illegal plants in full view of the public but the 33-year-old was brought before Burton Magistrates' Court on Thursday to admit producing the illegal Class B drug.
Horden, of Main Street, Stapenhill, admitted producing two small cannabis plants when the offence was reported to the police on July 4.
Horden's cannabis plants were 12in tall.
Sarah Smith, prosecuting, said: "He had two plants on his windowsill. After it was reported to the police he was asked to come into the station for questioning and said they were for his own personal use."
Helen Bennett, defending, said growth was unsophisticated and the plants were not 'in pod'.
She said: "He was asked to come the police station on a voluntary basis which he did.
"He has been a heavy drug user in the past. but has managed to deal with that and is undergoing treatment and is on methadone.
"He bought some weed and it had some seeds so he decided to plant the seeds and see what happened.
"It was in a plant pot, it wasn't sophisticated. They weren't in pod. He said if they had grown he would have smoked them.
"He is no longer subject to a community order and he worked well with that. He has never been in front of the court for drug matters before and has been out of trouble for 12 months."
The court also heard Horden suffers from severe depression and is currently off work, receiving benefits.
Horden was given a £110 fine, £145 court costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
