An actor making a film on Anglesey was ordered to pay £1,475 in fines and costs after admitting possessing illegal drugs at the island's airport.

Ashley Walters, who was filming Take Down at South Stack last month, appeared before magistrates at Holyhead charged with possessing cannabis.

The court heard the 32-year-old actor was arrested at Anglesey Airport on June 17 as he prepared to board a flight to Cardiff.

Diane Williams, prosecuting, said a quantity of herbal cannabis was found in a small glass jar in hand luggage and a further wrap of cannabis found in his wallet.

"The amounts are consistent with personal use," the prosecutor said.

She added Walters was arrested and told police officers he had been an occasion user of cannabis for 15 years.

Sam Parkin, defending, said his client realised his appearance before the magistrates was "a waste of the court's time" and apologised for it.

"He has a relatively high profile but that should not be held against him," the lawyer added.

Mr Parkin said a refence handed into court reflected on the "positive contribution" Walters made in his community.

Walters was fined £1,250 for possessing the drugs and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £125 and costs of £100.

During the 12-minute hearing Walters spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth and to enter a plea to the charge.

After the hearing he made no comment but added: "Justice was done."

Walters, also known as Asher D, is a rapper and actor known for being a member of So Solid Crew and starring in Channel 4 drama Top Boy.

He will star alongside Ed Westwick and Jeremy Sumpter in Take Down, a thriller about a group of rich young people taken hostage on a remote island
