Colorado saw its first month-by-month drop in cannabis sales since the state made history January 1 by becoming America's first state to legalize recreational marijuana use.

Sales were $31,626,965 in September, down 7.3 percent from August's retail sales of $34,125,200, reports the Denver Post.

Up until September, sales had grown steadily each month. However, mellow retailers say it's likely to become a typical seasonal slump in sales seen across many industries in the tourism dependent state.

The executive director of the Marijuana Industry Group Michael Elliott told CNN a drop in tourism is typical between summer and winter when the temperatures have dropped but the snow has yet to fall.

One retail store owner echoed Elliott's sentiment.

'Once the ski resorts open, sales will pick back up again,' Toni Fox, owner of Denver dispensary 3D Cannabis Center, told CNN.

Fox believes around 70 percent of her customers come from out-of-state to sample her wares.

The sales of marijuana also dropped 2.9 percent in September, but those statistics aren't as usual.

The medical marijuana market has seen random ups and downs since topping out at $36,040,335 in sales in February.
