A WOMAN charged with attempting to smuggle £1.1million worth of cannabis through Millbay Docks is to face trial this summer.

Sian Shakespeare, aged 44 and from Aston in Stafford, was arrested by officers from the UK Border Agency on March 25 last year.

She was charged with conspiring to evade the prohibition on the importation of 400kg of the drug – which turned out not to be cannabis.

Judge Francis Gilbert QC told Plymouth Crown Court that the trial had been delayed because "every three months another medical certificate arrives".

Judge Gilbert said: "This case has got to be brought to trial and I want to fix the date today."

The trial, which will take an estimated day and a half, will start on July 18.

Shakespeare remains on conditional bail.
