A 19-year-old found guilty of cannabis possession joked to police he had bought the drug from Co-Op.

Kai Clements, of Union Close in Bideford, was invited for an interview at Barnstaple Police Station in relation to two separate offences but did not turn up.

He was arrested on April 29 and was seen throwing away a grinder when he was taken to the cells.

The grinder was found to have cannabis in it and Clements was bailed until May 7.

However he failed to answer his bail and was later seen by police officers on May 15 who could smell cannabis on him and found 1.7 grams of the drug in his rucksack.

In interview following the first offence Clements told officers he had purchased his cannabis from the Co-op.

He said cannabis should be legalised and taxed, adding he would continue to use the drug.

Tim Hook, for the defence, said this was Clements' first adult conviction for "very small amounts of cannabis for personal use".

"It may well be he holds a not entirely unique view that perhaps cannabis could be legalised," continued Mr Hook. "I suppose there are more people who are in far more prestigious positions who might share this view.

"Yes, he might have made light of the fact that he was in possession of this substance. it was a very small quantity. He would have at some stage used it in the privacy of his own home."

Clements pleaded guilty to the two counts of possession and one charge of failing to answer police bail.

He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay a fine of £40 and a £20 victim surcharge.

Forfeiture and destruction of the drugs was also ordered.
