You pull out your favorite 510-thread battery expecting to enjoy a great vaping session. When you puff on it, though, nothing happens. You have a vape battery that’s not hitting – and unless you’re an experienced vaper, you may have no real idea about how to troubleshoot the problem.
How can you tell what the root of the issue is? Once you’ve done that, how do you fix it? A vape pen has so many potential points of failure that it can be difficult to know where you should even start.
In this guide, we’re going to give you the advice that you need.
Using our simple step-by-step method, you can troubleshoot any 510-thread battery that isn’t hitting by tracing the problem back to its source and fixing the component that’s causing the issue. We’ll have you up and running in no time, and then you can get back to vaping.
Check to See if Your 510-Thread Battery Is Blinking
Is your 510-thread battery blinking when you try to use it? Every vape battery has an indicator light that should blink when the device encounters a problem. The number of blinks – and sometimes the color – will indicate the type of issue that’s occurring. Most 510-thread batteries by Rokin Vapes, for example, blink five times when they need to be recharged. If you don’t know what the blink codes mean for your specific device, you can look them up in the instruction manual.
If you’re able to determine what the blink codes mean for your device, you can simply scroll to the appropriate section of this guide and continue your troubleshooting there. If the error codes aren’t available for your device – or it isn’t blinking at all – read on as we progress from the simpler solutions to the more complex ones.
Try Charging Your 510-Thread Battery
If your 510-thread battery isn’t hitting, the most likely problem is that the battery is dead. This can be the case if your device is blinking when you try to use it, and it can also be the case if the device isn’t doing anything at all because it’s possible that the battery’s charge is too low for the device to even blink.
Connect the vape to your computer using the included charging cable. The light should turn on, which confirms that the battery is charging. Depending on the battery’s capacity and charging speed, charging your device will take around a half hour or possibly a little longer.
If the light doesn’t come on immediately, wait a few minutes.
If the light still doesn’t come on, your vape battery isn’t charging. Follow these steps to troubleshoot it.
- Use a different charging cable if one is available. If you’re using a proprietary charger that connects to the device’s 510 threading, replace it only with the same type of charger from the same manufacturer.
- Use a different power source. It’s always a good idea to charge a vape battery through your computer’s USB port unless your device includes a manufacturer-approved wall adapter.
- Clean the charging port. You can use a toothpick to remove lint. If the charger connects to your vape battery’s threading, you can clean the threading using a cotton swab slightly moistened with rubbing alcohol.
Check for an Overheating Issue
If your 510-thread battery stopped hitting while you were using it – and you’re using it in a very warm environment such as in direct sunlight – the device may have overheated. Most vape batteries have internal temperature sensors, and your device will shut down for safety if the temperature is too high.
If you suspect that your 510-thread battery has overheated, move it to a cool location and leave it alone for an hour or so until it’s completely returned to room temperature. At that point, the device should resume working normally.
In the future, avoid using or storing your device in environments that would subject it to elevated temperatures. Don’t vape in direct sunlight and don’t leave your device in a parked car.
Check for an Issue with the Airflow Sensor
If you’re sure that your device’s battery is charged – and air is flowing smoothly through the cartridge when you puff on it – the problem might be that your vape battery’s airflow sensor is stuck and isn’t working properly. Try puffing a bit harder to draw air through the device more rapidly. You can also try tapping the device against your hand a few times to loosen the sensor.
Check for an Issue with the Cartridge
Troubleshooting a potential issue with the cartridge is the last step in fixing a 510-thread battery that isn’t hitting. A vape battery can’t work unless it has a reliable electrical connection with the cartridge, and there are several reasons why a poor connection could occur. We’ll walk you through it.
- Does air flow smoothly through the cartridge when you puff on it, or does the airflow seem blocked? If the airflow is blocked, the cartridge is clogged, or an airflow vent is closed.
- If you’re using a vape battery or cartridge with an adjustable intake vent, make sure it isn’t closed.
- If your device doesn’t have adjustable airflow, the cartridge is clogged. Try taking a short, sharp puff to break the clog. If that doesn’t work, you may be able to dislodge the clog by running a paperclip down the cartridge’s mouthpiece.
- Remove the cartridge and make sure that your device’s threading is clean. If the threading is contaminated with oil, clean it using a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Dry the threading completely before trying to use your device again.
- Make sure that the cartridge is screwed all the way into your device’s threading.
If you’re unable to get your 510-thread battery to start hitting by following all of the steps above, it’s possible that either the cartridge or the battery isn’t working correctly. You should try replacing the cartridge if you have another cartridge available to use. If the new cartridge works, the original cartridge is likely faulty. If neither cartridge works, it’s probably time to buy a new 510-thread battery.
