CBD Cigarettes Are Coming To Coop

If you find yourself in Switzerland in the near future, you should swing by an area location of the Coop supermarket, where the world’s first packaged hemp cigarettes are to be sold. But don’t think that these cigarettes are going to get you stoned, because they primarily consist of CBD-the non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant.

In 2011, Switzerland legalized cannabis. However, this came with one big stipulation: Products can only contain one percent or less of THC, the compound found in cannabis that induces a high. While creators of these cigarettes, a company called Heimat, respect the law’s limits on THC in cannabis products, the cigarettes do contain a high amount of CBD-about twenty percent.
So even if these smokes won’t get you faded, they can help tremendously with panic attacks, pain, inflammation and other medical concerns that can be treated with cannabis-and particularly, CBD.
As of July 24th, Heimat’s cigarettes will be available on their website and in the supermarket Coop, which readily embraces their product. Coop spokesman Urs Meier said that the supermarket already sells cannabis-infused items like beer, tea and oils because of the high demand for them. So to sell these cigarettes is truly no big deal to them. In fact, some branches are already selling this product, even though the official release date isn’t for another twelve days.
The cigarettes will cost 19.90 francs per pack, and will be available on Heimat’s website in addition to Coop supermarkets.
Not everybody is happy about the inclusion of CBD cigarettes at these stores. A member of a Swiss anti-drugs organization told 20 Minuten that Heimat’s product is “problematic,” due to the “lack of research” on the effects of CBD on the human body. Despite the naysayers, cannabis-infused products are a booming business, and Heimat is here to get their piece of the pie.
