Italian researchers, including one team led by Dr. Maria Nicoldi, have been making great strides in advancing our knowledge of how cannabis can help those who suffer with migraines. If you’ve ever had a migraine, you know what it feels like: the sensitivity, the dizziness and sometimes the inability to even function. Migraine sufferers are often desperate for relief, and struggle to find treatment programs that best manage their condition. Legislation Nicoldi and her team have discovered a combination of THC, the psychoactive component of the cannabis plant and CBD, the non-psychoactive component that reduced migraine pain in 48 suffers by as much as 55%. A 200mg dose was issued to participants to take orally, each dose containing 19% THC and 9% CBD. Phase two of the study consisted of 79 migraine patients. Some were given the 200mg cannabis medication while others were given a 25mg dose of amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant often used in the treatment of migraines. After three months of daily use, the cannabis group saw a 40.4 percent reduction in migraine attacks, a slightly better number than the amitriptyline group’s 40.1 percent reduction rate. The cannabinoids reduced migraine severity by 43.5 percent, and in female patients also reduced stomach ache, colitis and musculoskeletal pain. This means that the THC-CBD combination was just about as effective as the pharmaceutical methods used in treating chronic migraines. At a presentation of her findings at the 3rd Congress of the European Academy of Neurology in Amsterdam Nicoldi stated: “We were able to demonstrate that cannabinoids are an alternative to established treatments in migraine prevention.” And her study is not the first to point to such conclusions. A 2016 study conducted by the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Colorado found that inhaled and ingested cannabis can greatly reduce headaches. In this study, it was deemed that inhalation was the most effective treatment option, as edibles can take quite a bit longer to provide relief to sufferers. SOURCE Weed Daily
