Cannabis use in Britain has soared by a quarter as a result of Labour's decision to downgrade the drug's classification, a new research shows.

According to a report from Newcastle University, previous British Labour government's reclassification of cannabis from Class B to Class C, which lasted from January 2004 to January 2009, increased smoking of the drug by 25 percent and its regular consumption by 8 percent.

The temporary change in the law saw the maximum penalty for possessing the substance cut from five to two years.

The study also found that under the Labour government's move, violent and non-violent crime rose, with "strong" increases in cases of burglary, assault and theft.

"The estimates indicate that cannabis consumption - and in particular regular cannabis consumption - may induce people to at least ‘try out' criminal activities, while the increase in victimization may also point towards them engaging in riskier lifestyles in general," the report concluded.

In July last year, an official report on the age range of users of the most popular drugs warned that the age of first taking cannabis in UK has been lowered at eight.
