Top Strain Choice in Dutch Coffeeshops is 13.8% THC

The average THC content in the most commonly sold strain of cannabis grown in the Netherlands and available in coffee shops was 13.8% in 2024. This is a level similar to the strongest varieties, which had an average of 14.7% THC.
Data comes from the 25th edition of the THC Monitor, run by Trimbos-instituut. Since 1999, the institute, commissioned by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), has been testing THC levels in cannabis products sold in Dutch coffee shops every year. As part of the 2024 study, cannabis samples were purchased from 50 of the 565 coffee shops in the Netherlands. They were then analyzed in a laboratory for their psychoactive substances.
The new analysis method makes comparisons with previous years difficult.
This year's chemical analysis was carried out for the second time using the new, more precise HPLC-UV method. The results cannot therefore be directly compared with the years preceding the introduction of this technique. Whether we are dealing with lasting changes in THC levels remains to be seen in the coming years.
According to the Trimbos Institute: “In 2024, the average THC concentration in the most commonly sold nederwiet was 13.8%. In addition to the most popular varieties, the (alleged) strongest variety in each coffee shop was also tested. This contained an average of 14.7% THC. The differences between Coffeeshops' strongest and most popular nederwiet (strains grown domestically for sale in Coffeeshops) varieties were not statistically significant. Imported hashish contained an average of 22.1% THC, which is a significant decrease compared to previous measurements. Hashish made from nederwiet had an average of 26.3% THC, which is not significantly different from last year’s result.”
It is not clear whether the observed differences in THC levels indicate an upward or downward trend. The full study report is available for download.
