In November 2018 the UK law was changed so that specialist doctors could legally prescribe some certain products to individuals who have extreme medical conditions, despite this though many patients that could benefit from the plant are still to this day finding it very difficult to access medical cannabis treatments. Currently 14 year old Billy Caldwell who has a severe form of epilepsy is receiving free cannabis medicine privately from a North American company that is unlicensed in the UK. The treatment is now unfortunately coming to an end and his mother is taking legal action against the Health and Social Care board to try secure a longer term solution for his medication. Mrs Justice Keegan said : "I have difficulty getting my head around it. They say it's the right treatment, but nobody will write the prescription," BBC
