Cannabis and creativity are the perfect match

Cannabis and creativity are the perfect match. This applies not only to music, film, literature, or fashion, but also to design. Designers are creative souls and cannabis can have a very inspiring effect.

From prehistoric China and ancient India to Parisian cafés and the plains of the New World, cannabis has a storied and complex history spanning continents and millennia. It has been used in religious ceremonies by Shinto priests and Rastafarians, and has influenced creative movements including American jazz music, the Beat Generation, the hippie counterculture and hip-hop.

A new aesthetic

Cannabis has now evolved into a thriving international industry. It has become legal in several countries. This has paved the way for a new generation of design-conscious consumers and entrepreneurs. Publishing House Gestalten published a beautiful book on this: High on Design – The New Cannabis Culture. It takes an inspiring look at the new aesthetics and trends of contemporary cannabis culture, but also provides an in-depth view of the cannabis phenomenon in relation to politics, history, legalisation and society. With cutting-edge products and modern design, young companies are giving cannabis culture a refreshingly contemporary aesthetic.

Coffee shops as modern design palaces

High on Design focuses mainly on the international cannabis culture, but it is also clear that there is an increasing eye for design within the Netherlands. The look of coffee shops has changed dramatically over decades of cultural tolerance. Recently in particular, it has become clear that an increasing number of entrepreneurs are aware that a strong look is of great importance. Renowned architects and interior designers have transformed many coffee shops into modern design palaces where life is good. That is, once our coffee shops, a beloved Dutch cultural phenomenon, are permitted to allow customers again, once the corona virus has been conquered.
