Elton John has blasted the legalization of cannabis in North America, dubbing it addictive and a gateway to harder drugs.

Calling it "one of the biggest mistakes of all time." The iconic musician, sober for 34 years, has conveyed his views in an interview with Time magazine after being hailed the magazine's Icon of the Year.

"Cannabis is addictive. It leads to other drugs. And when you're high — and I was high — you don't think normally," he said, recollecting on his past personal experiences with the drug.

He also talked about how his throat problems while touring Australia in the mid-1980s were connected to cannabis use, which he quit on medical advice.

Cannabis has been legal in Canada since 2018, albeit with constraints on possession and distribution. Many U.S. states, such as California, have also legalised cannabis for medical or recreational use, although it remains illegal in others.

John is known for famously supporting other celebrities such as Eminem and Robbie Williams in their recovery from addiction and has spoken freely about how acknowledging his destructive behavior was fundamental in his recovery journey.

The musician also examined his temper as earlier explored in the 1997 documentary Tantrums and Tiaras, and connected his innovative pace in songwriting to his impatience. "If I have the lyrics and I look at them, the song comes out right away,".

Elton John's life and illustrious career are now the emphasis of a new documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late which was directed by husband David Furnish and RJ Cutler. The film focuses on the rehearsal for his final North American concert at Dodger Stadium, marking the end of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.
