Drugs debt forced Stoke-on-Trent addict to deal cannabis

A Stoke-on-Trent man who has been smoking cannabis since he was 11 years old has been spared jail.
A Stoke-on-Trent man who has been smoking cannabis since he was 11 years old has been spared jail.
Robert Degg, 24, started dealing the drug to feed his own habit, Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard.
Degg, of Kensington Road, Oakhill owed his own dealers £1,000 so began selling to a small number of people, said prosecutor Neil Ahuja.
He said police seized cannabis and a CS cannister from the Degg's home in August 2013.
Degg initially insisted that it was only a personal supply of cannabis, but later pleaded guilty to supplying the class B drug.
Mr Ahuja told the court that the cannister was given to Degg by a friend and that he had never used it nor planned to use it.
Rob Smith, defending, told the court Degg's problem with cannabis is "raging abuse."
He added: "He has crossed the line between being a user and a dealer, albeit on a small scale."
He described Degg as foolish and immature.
Judge David Fletcher sentenced Degg to a two-year prison sentence, suspended for two years.
He also ordered him to complete a nine-month drug rehabilitation order.
Judge told the court: "I will not take any messing around from him.
"The expectation will be no cannabis use.
"I do not want to hear of any positive tests."
