AN unemployed Barrow man tried to hide drugs from his girlfriend by stashing them in a microwave, a court heard.
Paul Maggs, 20, from Mount Pleasant, Barrow, attempted to run from police officers who executed a drugs warrant at his home on April 4.
He pleaded guilty to a charge of cannabis possession at Furness Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
Mr Peter Kelly, prosecuting, said police arrived at Maggs' house at around 10.20pm.
He said: "As officers entered, the defendant was seen to run out of the rear of the property but was found in the back yard and apprehended.
"Another officer saw the defendant throw items on to the kitchen roof. Two small snaplock bags of cannabis were recovered."
A search of the house was carried out by officers which revealed another small amount of cannabis inside a microwave in the kitchen, along with "drug related paraphernalia."
Mr Kelly said: "He admitted in interview it was his.
"He said he had kept the items in the microwave to keep them away from his partner.
"The microwave was broken so she would have no reason to look inside."
Mrs Maureen Fawcett, defending, said Maggs had fully co-operated with the police after his arrest.
She said: "He told them where the cannabis was and told them it was for his personal use and explained the circumstances."
She told the court Maggs had been trying to keep out of trouble after regularly offending during his teens, and had become a father.
After working with the youth offending service he had decided to try and get into work and education.
Presiding magistrate Catherine Alexander ordered Maggs to pay a fine of £70, court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £20.
