Governor Jack Markell enables Delaware to become the eighteenth state with relaxed pot laws

Six months from now, residents in Delaware will be allowed to possess up to an ounce of recreational weed for private use. However, the police will continue to have permission to confiscate any privately-held Cannabis.

Although public consumption will still lead to legal interference, the penalty will be reduced to a civil fine of $100. This replaces the former penalty of misdemeanor possession, which carried a maximum sentence of six months in jail, plus a fine of up to $1,150.

The state was already one of twenty-three, including Washington, D.C., to offer some form of medical Cannabis laws. While marijuana will be decriminalized in Delaware, it will not be legal, as it already is or will soon be in Oregon, Colorado, Alaska, Washington state and Washington, D.C.
