Two NFL Players And A High School Coach Aim to Open Medical Cannabis Dispensary
It’s a sign of the changing times in the history of marijuana when two well-known NFL players and a high school football and track coach from Ohio team up with cannabis-related business on the table, rather than sports.
Heisman Trophy recipient Troy Smith, former Cleveland Brown player Eric Metcalf, and Ted Ginn, Sr. are looking at various areas within the Cleveland, OH vicinity for the purpose of opening a medical marijuana dispensary. If approved, their license will be one of sixty set to be awarded sometime this year.
While the two NFL players have seen plenty of injuries on green Astroturf, the goal of selling something that’s green and healing is new. But they aren’t going it alone. Helping them along is Jim Buchanan, a former Cleveland resident who now owns a medical marijuana dispensary in Seattle.
The reason for opening a dispensary lies with Troy Smith. According to the Heisman winner, he started looking into medical marijuana to manage the head trauma from all the years he played football. The business decision ultimately comes from Smith. He says that he is only just beginning to realize the negative effects of banging his head around against the other players.
So it appears that, despite the football helmet, working all those years to win the Heisman trophy clearly came at a price. While fellow NFL player Eric Metcalf and Coach Ted Ginn didn’t weigh in on the topic, Troy Smith was a bit more candid by saying sports are “a great thing to watch while snacking on chicken wings, but it’s dead serious.”
The trio are looking at not just Cleveland, but also South Euclid, Warrensville Heights and Lakewood. They announced their interest in the South Euclid locale back in May, but the location decision has not been completely settled yet.
