City police received an anonymous tip this morning that a tree-sized marijuana plant was in the area of West Madison and North Charlotte streets.
They rather easily located it, Lt. Todd Umstead said.
Police said, over radio transmissions, they needed to have someone bring them a saw to cut down the plant. They indicated the cannabis plant was about 8 feet tall.
Outdoor marijuana plants "grow more like actual trees and can reach heights of 10 to 14 feet (or even taller)," according to a 2013 article at High Times, a digital and print publication about cannabis.
The tall Lancaster plant was cut down and taken to the county incinerator to be destroyed.
No charges were filed as police were unable to determine who actually owned and planted it.
Police occasionally find giant marijuana plants growing outdoors, Umstead added. Over the weekend, officers found a 6-foot-tall plant in the 500 block of Locust Street.
