On Friday, October 9, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton revealed that he had encountered a young woman smoking Cannabis on Wall Street early the previous morning.

As he addressed a group of law students at the CityLaw breakfast, Bratton recounted the event:

"All of a sudden, there it is - that smell. And I said, ‘What the hell? It's 8:30 on Wall Street." Bratton continued, "Directly in front of me is this young woman happily puffing away. She's got her earphones in and her schoolbag on her way to one of the local schools."

Bratton apparently reveled in the fact that the young woman recognized him as he and his security officer approached her, recalling, "And she looked over and I wish I had a photograph of that face - 'cause she instantly recognized me."

While the those in attendance of Bratton's remarks may have found humor in that comment, what he did next would remove the smile from most weed lovers' faces.

"So we politely removed the marijuana, threw it into the local sewer and just suggested she might have a better academic day without the influence of that on the way to school," the commissioner concluded.

Bratton's remarks were in response to a question posed by activist Lorna Shannon of Occupy Weed Street, a pro-pot legalization organization.

In 2014, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and Commissioner Bratton announced a marijuana decriminalization policy that reduced the penalty for possession of small amounts to a ticket-able offense.

Although the state legalized medical Cannabis last year, neither official supports the legalization of recreational weed, although Bratton reiterated his support for controlled medicinal marijuana access.
