Bruce Hunter: "We're not fixing a drug problem by sending people to jail"
SOURCE: www.rawstory.com AUTHOR: Stephen C. Webster Iowa State Rep. Bruce Hunter (D) told The Des Moines Register this week that he's planning to introduce two bills in the upcoming legislative session that would decriminalize marijuana possession and legalize the drug for medical purposes. "We've got a prison population that is made up of a lot of people that haven't really committed a violent crime, other than smoking some marijuana," he reportedly said. "It doesn't do anybody any good. We're not fixing a drug problem by sending people to jail with a bunch of other drug problems." Hunter's last attempt at marijuana reform, a medical marijuana bill introduced earlier this year, failed. He added that the next round of reform bills are also likely to fail due to the partisan divide in Iowa's general assembly and a likely veto from Gov. Terry Branstad (R). Rep. Hunter was unavailable for comment.
