In late July, an Ohio news outlet reported that a drone had been spied flying over the Mansfield Correctional Institution, also known as MANCI, but little else was said on the matter. Recently, JoEllen Smith, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, confirmed to the Mansfield News Journal that the drone was in fact carrying a package containing 65.4 grams of marijuana, 6.6 grams of heroin and 144.5 grams of tobacco.
The aerial delivery, which occurred on the afternoon of July 27, was intercepted by an inmate who was not the intended recipient. The package was thrown over the fence from the north to the south yard. The drop sparked a brawl among inmates in the recreation yard, which grew until guards quelled or dissuaded around 200 prisoners with pepper spray and ordered them to the ground. The prisoners were then herded into a gym and strip-searched, according to a report on the incident.
It was said that at least ten inmates were involved in the melee, although no injuries were reported. Officials confirmed that security camera footage showed the fight beginning just after a drone hovers over the area.
Mansfield Correctional Institution is a men's facility near Cleveland that houses around 2,500 inmates.
