Before teen heartthrob Justin Bieber performed Sunday night at Joe Louis Arena, border authorities searched one of his tour buses - and discovered marijuana.

The singer was not on the bus at the time, according to Kenneth Hammond, chief officer and public affairs liaison for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Detroit.

Hammond said in an e-mail Monday night that the bus was attempting to enter the U.S. from Canada via the Ambassador Bridge. During a secondary inspection, a police dog alerted authorities to the presence of drugs. Customs officers found and seized a small amount of marijuana intended for personal use and drug paraphernalia, Hammond said.

The bus driver was issued a civil penalty, according to Hammond. The bus and its passengers were then released. No further details were available.

In March, border authorities at the Ambassador Bridge discovered that a passenger on a tour bus associated with singer Rihanna had a small amount of marijuana. Rihanna was not on the bus.
